HUD-VASH Funding 7000+ New Vouchers

Posted On: June 4, 2024

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program aims to impact the lives of veterans experiencing homelessness profoundly. The program announced $78 million in funding which, as a result, will create over 7,000 new HUD-VASH vouchers,

“HUD is committed to working with housing agencies and Veteran Affairs Medical Centers across the country to get veterans off the street and into apartments they can afford. We owe them that,” said HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman.

HUD-VASH Program: A Comprehensive Approach

The HUD-VASH program combines HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) case management and clinical services. This integration ensures that veterans not only have a place to call home but also access high-quality healthcare and supportive services. The program addresses the root causes of homelessness among veterans by providing stable housing and support, promoting long-term stability and well-being.

Impact on Veterans

We cannot overstate the importance of the HUD-VASH program. Since its inception, the program has significantly reduced veteran homelessness. According to recent data, the number of veterans experiencing homelessness has decreased by 52% since 2010. In 2023 alone, VA and HUD permanently housed over 46,000 homeless veterans, surpassing the annual goal by 22.5%. These statistics underscore the effectiveness of the HUD-VASH program in transforming lives and communities.

Recent Developments and Ongoing Efforts

The $78 million allows more veterans to access stable housing and essential services. The joint efforts of HUD, VA, and the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness have significantly reduced veteran homelessness. The program’s success decreased the number of veterans experiencing homelessness and increased the number of veterans housed through the program.

According to HUD, the collaboration with the VA resulted in a 5% reduction in veteran homelessness since early 2020. These efforts have made a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of veterans nationwide.
