This week on Knowing More, we talked to residents about why house rules matter and how they help keep communities safe, clean, and fair. For property managers, the real challenge is making sure those rules are reasonable, clear, and easy to follow. so residents understand them and comply. That’s coming up.. On the Flip Side. First—make your rules specific and simple. Skip vague language like, “Be considerate” Instead, write something like this“Quiet hours are 10 P-M to 7 A-M. No loud music during these hours.” Clear rules prevent misunderstandings. Second? Explain “why.” Residents are more likely to follow rules when they understand the purpose. For Example:“Quiet hours help night-shift workers and families with young kids get rest.” Third—keep rules compliant. House rules must • Align with HUD policies• Avoid discrimination• and Support—not override?—the lease agreement Finally—make them easy to find. Use bullet points, simple formatting, and share rules everywhere: You can use Email, tenant portals, welcome packets, and printed copies. Bottom line? Good house rules build trust, reduce conflict, and protect your property. Write them with clarity, care, and compliance in mind.
