At Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, innovation is at the heart of our mission. We’re committed to finding data-backed solutions that address the challenges posed by the affordable housing crisis. Recently, we had the incredible opportunity to showcase our work on a national platform alongside industry experts who share our passion for sustainable housing. Our appearance on “The Build Show” marks a significant milestone in our journey, and we’re excited to share our experience with you.

The Build Show, hosted by the renowned builder Matt Risinger, celebrates innovation, craftsmanship, and sustainable building practices. It’s a platform where experts come together to discuss groundbreaking technologies, building techniques, and solutions that shape the future of construction.

P. Allen Smith and Extreme Panel Technologies invited our Director of Planning and Development, Matthew Churnock, to be on their episode. Extreme is a Trusted Navigate Partner on two sustainable homes being completed at Goldwire Heights in Birmingham, Alabama. Matthew’s expertise and insights into Navigate’s latest work became the focal point of our appearance. Our appearance on the show allowed us to spotlight Navigate Affordable Housing Partners’ commitment to affordable, sustainable, and innovative housing solutions. It was an opportunity to shed light on our dedication to creating long-term affordability in housing through the use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

SIPs: A Data-Backed Solution

SIP panels have been a game-changer in our approach to housing. Our analysis shows the use of SIP panels has significantly impacted key aspects of our projects, bringing forth remarkable results, which Matthew will discuss in the upcoming episode:

1. Install Time:
The efficiency of SIP panels shines in install time. When compared to traditional construction methods, SIP panels offer a remarkable reduction in installation hours.

2. Electrical Work:
The efficiency of SIP panels isn’t just limited to installation. Even electrical work saw a significant reduction in man-hours. This not only speeds up the process but also contributes to cost savings.

3. Material Waste and Damage:
One of the standout advantages of SIP panels is the almost non-existent waste and damage.

4. Energy Efficiency – HERS Rating:
The focus on sustainable housing is evident in the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) ratings, which came back at 54.

5. Blower Door Test:
The energy efficiency of SIP panels translated into a remarkable blower door test result.

6. Exposure and Construction Time:
The speed of construction and minimal exposure to the elements were key takeaways.

7. Contractor Insights:
SIP panels have the potential to replace an experienced framing crew with low-skilled labor and a foreman.

While SIP panels offer numerous advantages, Matthew does acknowledge potential challenges. SIP construction requires experienced material handlers and machinery. However, these challenges can be overcome with experience, and the benefits far outweigh the obstacles.
