Montgomery affordable housing is getting a boost. The city won HUD’s Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) competition. HUD awarded 21 nationwide grants, including $3.58 million for Montgomery. This investment will address nearly 60 years of disinvestment along the National Historic Selma to Montgomery Trail. The grant will facilitate the construction of new energy-efficient affordable housing units and the rehabilitation of existing ones for low- to moderate-income households.
Enhancing Montgomery Affordable Housing Production and Preservation
This funding is crucial in boosting affordable housing production and preservation in Montgomery. By building new homes and revitalizing existing ones, the city can offer more housing options to its residents, ensuring a stable and inclusive community. The dual focus on new construction and rehabilitation maximizes the impact, benefiting various community sectors and fostering long-term growth.
Lowering Housing Costs
Energy-efficient homes reduce utility costs, significantly lowering residents’ overall housing expenses. By improving the quality and availability of affordable housing, Montgomery can better meet its residents’ needs, helping to stabilize and reduce housing costs across the city.
A Future of Stability and Growth
The impact of this funding extends beyond affordable housing. It could bring hope and stability to families and individuals facing housing insecurity. The projects funded by this grant could also transform historically disinvested areas into vibrant, thriving communities, while preserving the rich heritage of the National Historic Selma to Montgomery Trail.
