In the News: Navigate CEO Lisa McCarroll Discusses the Future of Affordable Housing in Birmingham

Posted On: June 16, 2022

Lisa McCarroll, CEO of Navigate Affordable Housing Partners, was recently featured in an article by The Birmingham Times. The article highlights the organization’s mission to not just build better housing in the historic North Titusville neighborhood but also “to build momentum towards a better city.” McCarroll emphasized that Navigate wants to be a catalyst for positive change and that the organization’s vision is to be an instrument of that change in the housing industry.

The article also discusses Navigate’s recent modular construction project, the Live on 1st development, which consists of three modular, single-family homes in North Titusville. McCarroll explains that the project was a challenge, as the homes needed to be both affordable and high-quality. However, she believes that the Live on 1st project is a testament to what is possible when affordability and quality are treated equally.

McCarroll notes that Navigate worked with its partners, the Alabama Power Company and the Design Initiative, to address affordability in Live on 1st homes from multiple angles. The homes are lease-purchase, which will give “buyers more time to save money and qualify for a mortgage. Additionally, residents have access to financial counselors before formally entering agreements.”

The article also highlights Navigate’s focus on improving the North Titusville neighborhood of Birmingham. Navigate is renovating 12 homes on 5th Court South and plans to build five new homes in the Goldwire Heights subdivision nearby.
