Apply for lead-based paint clean up

Posted On: January 18, 2018

This week, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced $25 million in grants “to identify and eliminate lead-based paint hazards in public housing.”

The agency will award the grants to 30 recipients. The awards range from $25,000 to $1 million. Applications are due March 20, 2018.

HUD’s Public and Indian Housing Lead-Based Paint Capital Fund Program is offering the funds. According to HUD, “This funding is needed for housing developments that were tested and abated over twenty years ago and those past control methods may no longer be effective. Additionally, the funding helps meet the backlog of capital needs for public housing. While lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, many older homes, especially un-assisted housing units, may still contain hazards that require proper cleanup.”

Lead-based paint is an issue HUD has been trying to resolve for decades. In 2015, close to 12k children tested had confirmed blood lead levels ?10 µg/dL. Last year, HUD lowered the Department’s blood lead levels threshold for children.  The new level in HUD’s Lead Safe Housing Rule takes it down to 5 micrograms per deciliter.
